The Adventures
of Diana and Harry
Diana and Harry Foster were evacuee children of World War
II, their lives disrupted like many thousands of young people. Sent away
from London to be cared for in a small Yorkshire village, they adapted
well - they had no choice. When their father was reported as missing,
presumed dead, and their mother badly injured in a bombing raid, their
world was turned upside down.
Together they braved a long journey to start a new life in Canada, in
the care of their aunt. Their fascinating story runs parallel with a pocket-size
account of the war which Harry follows avidly as he listens to reports
on the radio.
We follow the children's exciting adventures as they capture a German
pilot on Ilkley Moor, get lost in a snowstorm to be eventually rescued
by Red Indians, fly in a sea plane over the great lakes of Canada - would
their friends ever believe their remarkable stories?

Destiny '39
Following a personal disappointment, 19-year-old John Swain
joined the Territorial Army in late August 1939, unaware of what destiny
had in store just days away. When Britain declared war on Germany on 3
September he was serving as a Gunner in the 99th London Welsh Regiment,
Royal Artillery, Anti-Aircraft. As the war progressed. Swain's increasingly
expert knowledge of guns led to a posting at the Military College of Science
at Stoke on Trent, and voyages to secret foreign destinations, where his
technical skills were vital to defeating the enemy. Destiny '39 is one
man's account of the routines, dangers, excitement and camaraderie of
those war years in Europe and North Africa, when life for a soldier was
cheap and violent death a constant spectre. From the perils of mortar
shells to the hazards of exotic beauties who could lure a young soldier
from his patriotic duty. Swain tells his story with wit, humour and keen
observation.

Four Glourious
Years
Four Glorious Years is a fascinating and stirring account
of the heroic and invaluable achievements performed by the Naval Nurses
and the Red Cross during the Second World War. Through her experiences
as a Red Cross Nurse, Mono Stanton also encapsulates the poignant struggles
which took place on the hospital wards and the tireless dedication of
her colleagues. The book vividly recreates the spirit and character of
the young men and women whose youth and dreams were so dramatically shattered
with the outbreak of war but also celebrates their courageous and inspiring
commitment.
" ...a chronicle that gives a personal dimension to events that might
otherwise seem far removed from the world we now know ."
-Dame Catherine Tizard GCMG, DBE
"Fifty years of service to the Red Cross by a Levin
Woman... Mona Stanton became the first local recipinet of the 50 years
service medal."
-The Chronicle
"Four Glorious Years is an impressive heart warming
true story. It is written in honour of the men and women who so selflessly
gave so much to regain peace around the globe."
- International History of Nursing Journal
"I was inspired to write this poem of tribute to 'The
Women of Anzac' after reading Mona Stanton's wonderful book".
