The Seán Devereux Story 1964-1993
On 2 January 1993, UN aid-worker Seán
Devereux was shot dead by a Somali gunman. He was twenty-eight. His 'crime'
was to speak out against local warlords who stole UN supplied food from
their own starving people; the Kalashnikov that killed him was one of
the many weapons supplied by the 'civilised' world to developing countries
whose people were dying as a result of civil war and ethnic cleansing.
Yet Seán did much more than speak. He spent much of his short adult
life as a teacher and aid-worker in Liberia and Somalia, setting up feeding
stations and offering hands-on help in two of Africa's most explosive
nations. His work was characterised by dynamism, commitment and an unfailing,
sometimes wicked sense of fun, which endured even amid the horrors he
witnessed. With his bag of magic tricks and incredible energy, Seán
was a mentor and a friend who tried to give back their lost childhood
to the children of Africa.
This is his story, and theirs.
