The Learning Curve of Love

Excellent, hilarious spoof on the shenanigans of university life.
Meet Desmond Bickerton and his naive passion for a younger woman, Susan. He lives for the weekly possibility of seeing her in the canteen, is having an imaginary love affair with her and goes to great lengths to see her even taking a holiday in the Algarve, knowing she will be there, and making a fool of himself by climbing onto her boat and falling off, in the process catching her in flagrante with the Vice Chancellor of the university.
Granlaw gives us insight into the intrigues and irritations of a close-knit university life, ambitious Susan for whom nothing will stand in her way in order to secure her continued academic status at the university and to secure the men who take her fancy. Then there is the nasty Arnie who is brilliant at winding people up and for a while we think he achieves it without comeuppance, but does he? Granlaw writes in a measured, humorous and analytical fashion which leaves the reader in stitches...

Bitter Fruit
Bibo is a young, overweight black girl whose only escape from her unhappy home life is through the pages of romantic novels. She thinks her luck has changed when she meets the charming Raymond and moves in with him, but he soon turns out to be cruel, violent and demanding, with a child he forgot to mention and a taste for Bibo’s pretty younger sister.
It is only after several near-tragedies that Bibo learns to love herself and her dysfunctional family, exchanging the shallow values of her fictional heroines for the more solid foundations of academic success and reconciliation with those who have hurt her.
Seasoned with sadness, humour and a pinch of suspense, Bitter Fruit is a bittersweet tale that explores the experiences of black immigrants in England, and shows how even the bleakest situations can be overcome with courage and self-belief.

Mirror Image
Constance Erminton-Squires has a charmed life. Born into the English aristocracy, she is rich, beautiful, clever and compassionate. But she is also headstrong, and when a visit to Kenya leads to romance and ultimately marriage with Joseph, an African radical, her family disowns her, leaving her to pursue her two great passions – her husband and a flourishing nursing career in the slums of Nairobi.
When the marriage crumbles, Constance returns to England, pregnant with twins and isolated but for one loyal friend. Then, after some shattering news and a traumatic birth, she is told that one of her baby boys has died.
Or has he? As one son grows into a cold product of the wealth-obsessed Thatcherite era, a young mixed-race journalist devoted to social justice is moving relentlessly towards finding the parents he believes abandoned him at birth…
From the volatile political landscape of pre- and post-independence Kenya to the wild Cornish coastline and the corporate greed of the City, Mirror Image is a powerful tale of prejudice, loss and the joys of rediscovery.

Wilson Lacigam's Bentley
Time’s up for Wilson Lacigam, the parking ticket on the windscreen of his Bentley a silent witness to the barrister’s fatal heart attack during a visit to his Savile Row tailor.
But although the hereafter beckons, he is speedily returned to the here-and-now with an urgent brief to prepare the way for the arrival of a modern-day Messiah – a quiet, unimposing man with world-shattering ideas but lousy dress sense.
Cue a crack PR team whose job is to turn the Messiah into a high-profile media personality, so that his message can be heard by a culture that demands instant fame and prefabricated glamour.
Wilson Lacigam’s Bentley presents the dilemma faced by all those with profound messages to convey: how to present the simple truth to a world that worships superficial glitz, yet where people are increasingly searching for a purpose to their lives.
