The Learning Curve of Love
Excellent, hilarious spoof on the shenanigans of university life.
Meet Desmond Bickerton and his naive passion for a younger woman, Susan.
He lives for the weekly possibility of seeing her in the canteen, is having
an imaginary love affair with her and goes to great lengths to see her even
taking a holiday in the Algarve, knowing she will be there, and making a
fool of himself by climbing onto her boat and falling off, in the process
catching her in flagrante with the Vice Chancellor of the university.
Granlaw gives us insight into the intrigues and irritations of a close-knit
university life, ambitious Susan for whom nothing will stand in her way
in order to secure her continued academic status at the university and to
secure the men who take her fancy. Then there is the nasty Arnie who is
brilliant at winding people up and for a while we think he achieves it without
comeuppance, but does he? Granlaw writes in a measured, humorous and analytical
fashion which leaves the reader in stitches...

Bitter Fruit
Bibo is a young, overweight black girl whose only escape
from her unhappy home life is through the pages of romantic novels. She
thinks her luck has changed when she meets the charming Raymond and moves
in with him, but he soon turns out to be cruel, violent and demanding,
with a child he forgot to mention and a taste for Bibos pretty younger
sister.
It is only after several near-tragedies that Bibo learns to love herself
and her dysfunctional family, exchanging the shallow values of her fictional
heroines for the more solid foundations of academic success and reconciliation
with those who have hurt her.
Seasoned with sadness, humour and a pinch of suspense, Bitter Fruit is
a bittersweet tale that explores the experiences of black immigrants in
England, and shows how even the bleakest situations can be overcome with
courage and self-belief.
