Oh, These Jews!
Tel Aviv Airport, 1997 a handful of people, furious at the delay
caused by a sudden airline strike, pass the time by listening to an absorbing
story written by an Israeli author. Little did the listeners realise the
effect the story would have on them
The characters in the book are all real, an undivided part of the authors
life. In the midst of the plot, under an unendurable persecution of the
Jews by the Nazi regime at the Riga ghetto in Latvia, the love story of
a man and woman is intertwined. Their love triumphed, thanks to the assistance
of four Christian women who had the courage to stand by the Jewish refugee
while putting their own lives at risk.
The life of the refugee, Alex Gutman, depended solely on the brutal will
of the Nazis. If he survived, he would feel obligated to publish his story
to the world in honour of those who helped save him All nations
should learn from the Holocaust and everyone needs to do some soul searching.
Totally engrossing, Oh These Jews is heart-rending but compulsive reading.
